The showpiece of Herreninsel in Lake Chiemsee is certainly the royal castle, which you can reach on foot in about 15 minutes from the pier. But the Herrenchiemsee Park with its unique water features or the idyllic forest are just as worth seeing. Near the steamer pier is the so-called “Old Palace” a former monastery, as it is located in one of the oldest monastery complexes in Bavaria. This is where the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany was drafted during the Constitutional Convention in 1948. During a walk across the island, you can also admire the numerous horses of the state stud farm on the estate.
