Right in the heart of the picturesque old town of Görlitz lies the Untermarkt, which was laid out in the tradition of Silesian and Bohemian marketplaces with a row of houses in the middle. The medieval trade route Via Regia once ran along here via the Untermarkt. Today, the central square is a popular destination for tourists who dare to climb the tower of the town hall, visit the famous Whispering Arch or simply enjoy the beautiful old town with its arcades of magnificent Renaissance and Baroque merchant houses in one of the cosy cafés and restaurants. Throughout the year, many events take place on the Lower Market Square, such as the Silesian Tippelmarkt or the Silesian Christkindelmarkt.
