After it was built in the middle of the 17th century by Duke Georg Wilhelm, the Ballhofplatz in Hanover was mainly used for ball games and dancing. Shuttlecock games in particular were very popular here at the time. Over the centuries, Ballhofplatz was then used as a theatre, club and clubhouse, as well as a home for the Hitler Youth. After its destruction in the Second World War, the unique venue was rebuilt and is now the venue of the Lower Saxony State Theatre in Hanover, which mainly performs modern plays here. Popular events at the Ballhof also include salsa nights, tango events, experimental performances by the “Junges Theater” and the Jazz am Ballhof concert series organised by the Jazzclub Hannover.
