Formerly a prison, today a sight: Heidelberg’s last student prison in Augustinergasse, which was still used by Heidelberg University until 1914. Since the 1780s, students could be locked up in the student prison for offences such as disturbing the peace at night or other breaches of public order. The history of the student carceral in Heidelberg dates back to the 14th century when the university could still exercise full jurisdiction over students. In this last surviving prison, which is now part of the Museum of the History of Heidelberg University, the colourful murals of the last inmates with names, likenesses and insignia of their respective student fraternities are particularly worth seeing.
