About nine kilometres southwest of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in the municipality of Grainau, is the idyllic Eibsee lake with a total area of about 1.2 hectares. A leisurely boat trip on the shimmering green calm waters with a view of the majestic Zugspitze and the Wetterstein mountains is a wonderful way to relax. The Eibsee is a natural paradise that is used both as a local recreation area and as a tourist destination, but is entirely privately owned. There are eight or new small islands in the lake, depending on how you count them. The Eibsee is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in Bavaria and was formed at the end of the Würm cold period when the Isar-Loisach glacier retreated.
