Situated on a steep vineyard slope directly on the lake is the beautiful Lake Constance town of Meersburg. The historic old town with its well-kept half-timbered houses and medieval sights is divided into the upper and lower town. As the town center, which originally consisted only of the present upper town, grew faster and faster, the area of the lower town, which lies directly on the lake, was artificially filled in. The lively center was the Market Street, which is now called Lower Town Street. Here you can also find the historical Lower Gate, which used to be called the Front Lake Gate. The former opposite, the Hintere Seetor, was demolished in 1847 as part of the modernization of the district or the construction of the harbor.
