As one of the most famous sights of the city, it is part of every city tour: the Diebsturm of Michelstadt. Built in 950 as part of the town’s castle complex, the tower – as the name suggests – served as a prison from 1312. Since the lower part of the Diebsturm has no doors or windows, the prisoners were lowered from the floor above with a rope to their cell. Until 1798, the tower also had a historical tower hood. This was then replaced by the half-timbered tower that is still preserved today. Interested visitors can tour the more than 1,000-year-old tower today.
