Monument to the Franco-Prussian War

High above the Rhine, the imposing Niederwald Monument can be seen from far away in the valley. At over 38 metres, the monument with the figure of Germania commemorates the Franco-Prussian War and the unification of the empire. On the main relief, 133 historical generals and princes are depicted in life-size. Below is an inscription with five stanzas of the song “Die Wacht am Rhein”. The Niederwald Monument can be reached either by car or train or by ferry from Bingen to Rüdesheim. A hiking trail leads up from the town. If you prefer something more spectacular, you can also float to the top in a cable car.
