Old customs office in the Rhine

Not far from the Loreley, Pfalzgrafenstein Castle near Kaub is picturesquely located on a rocky reef in the middle of the Bacharach narrow valley. Therefore, it can only be reached by visitors from Kaub every half hour by passenger ferry – except during high and low tide. Guided tours through the historic walls of Pfalzgrafenstein Castle are available on request. The castle was built in 1327 as a guard station. Here customs duties were collected for the town of Kaub for the passage across the Rhine, which ensured a good source of income for the feudal lords of the town. In the course of the 15th century, Pfalzgrafenstein Castle was also used as a court and prison.
