As the older part of the Bavarian market town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Partenkirchen’s old town has had a very eventful history. Where Ludwigstraße and Alte Gsteig lead through the historic core of the old town today, the Roman trade route Via Raetia between Augsburg and Venice was located about 2000 years ago. It is therefore not surprising that Partenkirchen was a frequent destination for traders, merchants, pilgrims as well as kings and emperors, who felt at home in the town with its idyllic Alpine panorama. Even today, the town attracts numerous tourists every year who want to experience the unique mixture of Alpine flair and Bavarian cosiness.
