The Nikolai Church on the Old Market Square with its striking dome has had an eventful history. The building was completely destroyed in a devastating fire in the year. Reconstruction began in 1828 according to the designs of Karl Friedrich Schiekel. In the foreground, next to the portal supported by columns and modeled on an ancient temple, is the ground plan in the form of a Greek cross. A semicircular apse is attached to one of the arms of the cross. In 1850, the Nikolaikirche in Potsdam was consecrated for a second time. After restoration due to heavy destruction during the Second World War, the third consecration took place in 1981.
