Statue on Maximilianstraße

The famous statue of St. James pilgrim in the centre of Speyer is a popular photo motif for tourists and is hard to miss thanks to its prominent location in the middle of the city centre. It stands on Maximilanstraße, almost exactly in the middle between the cathedral and the Altpörtl city gate. Bishop Anton Schlembach donated the impressive bronze figure of a pilgrim to the city in 1990 to mark the city’s 2000th anniversary. Artist Martin Meyer depicts a pilgrim wearing a wide cloak and a hat. The pilgrim looks at the path ahead of him without looking at his surroundings and appears to be following his pilgrimage with bare feet and long strides.
