Testimony to sacred art

The special thing about St Joseph’s Church in Speyer is the sacred art inside the church building. After a relatively short construction period from 1912 to 1914, the church was consecrated by the then Bishop Dr von Faulhauber. The well-known Munich painter Ronge not only designed the paintings for the side altars, but also the four high altar paintings with scenes from the childhood of Jesus, which were painted after a model from the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. The Trinity group and the Pieta in the Chapel of St Giles are also noteworthy. This was remodelled into a memorial chapel for fallen soldiers in 1925. A comprehensive renovation took place at the end of the 1980s.
