Wertheim’s historic market square is not square, as in other towns, but rather elongated. The town’s central square is surrounded by well-preserved half-timbered houses. Some of these date back to the 16th century. House No. 6 is a particular eye-catcher – one of the oldest and, above all, narrowest houses in Franconia. The “Zobel’sche Haus” was named after the knight von Zobel. However, there is no proven connection to this knight. Every Saturday, the well-known “Green Market” takes place on Wertheim’s market square. In the past, the town’s merchants lived in the Maingasse with its magnificent houses, which adjoins the market square.
