… There’s always something going on around St Mary’s Column. Not far away you will find the famous Viktulalienmarkt with its numerous market stalls. If you prefer things a little quieter, the Deutsches Museum is the place to be. In one of the largest science museums in the world, you can experience how technology and the laws of nature work in 20 departments – you will also find interactive stations to take part in. In the Isar floodplain nature reserve, there is an excursion destination that will make children’s hearts beat faster: Hellabrunn Zoo. Founded in 1911, the park is the world’s first geozoo and is home to around 18,500 animals from 529 species. In addition to the jungle house and the aquarium, the historic elephant house is also well worth a visit. You can experience a piece of sporting history in Munich’s Olympic Park. The site, which was created for the 1972 Summer Olympics and includes the Olympic Stadium, Olympic Hall and Olympic Tower, is world-famous. The extensive grounds with the idyllic lake and the hill are a popular meeting place and recreation area for locals. Concerts and festivals are also regularly held here. You shouldn’t miss the view from the 190 metre high Olympic Tower either. With good visibility, you can see not only Munich and the surrounding area, but also the Salzkammergut and the Allgäu Alps. However, most visitors clearly come to Munich in autumn to experience the world’s biggest folk festival on Munich’s Theresienwiese, the Munich Oktoberfest. From the end of September to mid-October, you can sample beers from six Munich breweries and numerous Bavarian delicacies in almost 40 festival tents and experience the many rides.
