With its distinctive steeple, Mittenwald’s Church of St. Peter and Paul is the town’s landmark. No wonder, then, that the 18th century church is one of the most popular photo motifs in Alpenwelt Karwendel and the pride of its inhabitants. The church was built by master builder Joseph Schmutzer. The elaborate colorful frescoes were created by the famous artist Matthäus Günther. A clue to the name of the church can be found on the steeple: after its completion in 1746, the church patrons Peter and Paul were painted on it. The church of St. Peter and Paul in Mittenwald also became famous because the Way of St. James passes directly here.
