For many tourists, a visit to the time-honoured Hofbräuhaus is an essential part of a trip to Munich. The historic building was built almost 500 years ago and was also the place where the beer of the Hofbräu München brand was brewed in its own brewing facilities until the 20th century. At this time, the image of the Hofbräuhaus as the most famous pub in the world also changed. Currently, Hofbräu beer is produced in a large brewery on the outskirts of Munich. Even today, the Bavarian Purity Law from 1516 still applies to the brewery. The historic brewing regulation was the very first food law in the world.
