Numerous tourists from all over the world flock here all year round – in Heidelberg’s Old Town. And there is a reason for this. The medieval city centre with its time-honoured monuments, magnificent baroque buildings and winding alleyways really is a very special place. The many international students who …

… in the faculties of Germany’s oldest university in the heart of the city, characterise the lively face of the city centre. The world-famous Heidelberg Castle towers high above the old town with the Königsstuhl forest in the background. A very special experience is the regular illumination of Heidelberg Castle, which shows the city’s impressive landmark in atmospheric light. The view from the 13th century ruins of the Neckar meandering through the city is also not to be missed. Opposite, on the other bank of the river, is the famous Philosopher’s Path. Here you will find very unusual Mediterranean vegetation with cypresses, bamboo, palm trees and pines. Near the Philosopher’s Path is also the Snake Path, which leads from the Old Bridge over vineyard terraces with wonderful viewing platforms up into a forest. Here, just like in the Philosopher’s Garden, you have a great view of Heidelberg’s Old Town, the castle and the Königsstuhl. Due to the many exotic plants such as almond trees, lemon trees and gingko trees that grow here, the Philosopher’s Garden is also known as the “sun-drenched natural balcony”. Another famous sight in the city is the Old Bridge with its medieval bridge gate. Nearby you will find the Neckarwiese – the ideal place for relaxation, games, sport and fun. In addition to numerous walking paths and playgrounds, you will find a 5-hectare area for relaxing and strolling on the banks of the river with a view of the old town and Heidelberg Castle. You can hire a boat from the pedal boat hire on the banks of the Neckar and explore the Neckar on a leisurely trip. You can also marvel at the castle illuminations with impressive fireworks, which take place three times a year, from the Neckarwiese.
