Where the knight Götz von Berlichingen spent a few years of his childhood, visitors today can marvel at historical exhibits in the castle museum or stay overnight in the castle’s own hotel. In addition, the famous castle festival has been held annually at the hilltop castle, also known as Götzenburg, since 1950. The 15th-century castle comprises a palace with a knights’ hall, a women’s house with a bower, a keep and a servants’ quarters with large corner towers. Today, the castle is privately owned by the von Berlichingen family and is currently occupied by Alexandra Freifrau von Berlichingen, the widow of former German President Roman Herzog. He also lived here in the last years before his death.
