The picturesque town of Sierksdorf is located roughly in the centre of the Bay of Lübeck and has a lot to offer visitors. The extensive Sierksdorf beach stretches for a total of five kilometres. The Haffkrug dog beach is a great tip for anyone spending their holiday at the Baltic Sea with their dog. Many events take place in the town, especially in summer, such as the famous eel week on the last weekend in July. The new Haffkrug pier was officially opened in September 2024. The imposing structure zigzags 230 metres across the water and offers a unique view of the Baltic Sea. Events are planned in its own event area and you can watch ships mooring and casting off from a platform with a glass cover. A highlight that you should definitely not miss!
It’s only a stone’s throw from Haffkrug to Scharbeutz – perfect for anyone planning a Baltic Sea round trip by car. The town’s most popular meeting place is the Scharbeutz lakeside promenade. Along the extensive beach promenade, you will find many small shops as well as cafés and restaurants where you can take a break. Due to the wide range of snacks on offer, the promenade is also known as the ‘fish sandwich mile’. There is definitely something tasty for everyone here. Cyclists and skaters also like to cavort on the dune mile during the day. Nearby on Strandallee you will find a very special sight – the Scharbeutz beach church. But the biggest visitor magnet is and remains the Scharbeutz Baltic Sea beach. Here you can swim, jog, play volleyball or simply relax in the sun. In summer, the municipality of Scharbeutz also organises numerous events here. If you like it particularly romantic, you can watch the sunset from the gallery on Strandallee. One of the best-known coastal resorts for a holiday in the Bay of Lübeck is certainly Timmendorfer beach. Especially in summer, life here takes place on the beach. In addition to a free sports programme with beach volleyball and surfing, the beach is also used by numerous sun worshippers and walkers. The dog beach and the nudist area are also popular. Don’t miss the car-free spa promenade, which runs partly through the forest, when you visit the popular holiday resort. Here you can take a wonderful stroll and explore the beautiful shops, boutiques, cafés and restaurants. Extra tip for families with children: There is a sea aquarium nearby that is well worth a visit. The famous MARITIM pier is also a real highlight. Events such as the pier festival and the finals of the German beach volleyball and beach polo championships are regularly held here. You can experience a bit of an Asian atmosphere at the Mikado Garden in Timmendorfer Strand. Here you will find numerous stone sculptures, various exhibitions and a bookshop. The Mikado Garden is also a frequent venue for art and cultural events. By the way: Timmendorfer Strand is located on the famous Baltic Sea coastal cycle path from Flensburg to Travemünde. It’s well worth a stop!
A little less well-known than neighbouring Timmendorfer beach, Niendorf is nevertheless an ideal destination for your Baltic Sea holiday in Schleswig-Holstein. An absolute must is the Niendorf beach promenade, which leads over seven kilometres to the Ostseetherme Timmendorf beach. Here you will find imposing 19th century villas, many good restaurants and beach chairs with a view of the sea. For children, there is a real play paradise on the promenade with great opportunities to run around and play. Important for dog owners: dogs may only be walked on the promenade between October and April. But the kilometre-long sandy beach and the dunes behind it are also perfect for long walks. If you prefer something a little more rustic, you should also pay a visit to the smallest active fishing harbour in Germany. And of course, a dip in the cool water is a must. You can do this in a very special way at the Niendorf pier, also known as the ‘Fischhead pier’. On the hydraulic bathing jetty, you can lower yourself into the water from the new 185 metre-long bridge. With play equipment, information stands and swivel loungers.
Anyone on holiday by the sea in Schleswig-Holstein should definitely experience the wildness of nature. The Brodten Cliff is the perfect place for this. One of the popular Baltic Sea cycle paths runs along the top – a great six-kilometre tour from Niendorf to Travemünde. The view from the cliff, which is 20 metres high in places, is breathtaking and regularly attracts many hikers. With a bit of luck, you may also see the rare sand martins that nest in the cliffs here on the Bay of Lübeck. There is also a great path below the cliffs that leads directly along the beach. But beware: this path is less suitable for pushchairs or hikers who are not good walkers. There are often a lot of stones here and fallen trees or broken banks obstruct the passage along the Brodten shore. Incidentally, you can also switch between the upper and lower path – but only at one point between Niendorf and Hermannshöhe. This is also the location of the famous Hermannshöhe restaurant with its unique view of the Bay of Lübeck. So if you need a break after so much exercise on the Brodten Cliff, the adventure café with its large terrace is just the place for you.
In the idyllic old town of Travemünde, you can still find well-preserved evidence of the Middle Ages. In addition to St Lawrence’s Church, the Old Market Square is home to numerous well-preserved half-timbered houses and historic brick houses with gabled facades. Travemünde’s sights also include the Old Bailiwick, where the Lübeck bailiffs dispensed justice in the 16th century. On a tour of the picturesque town, you should also plan a stop at the quaint fishing harbour. Here you can marvel at the ships, watch fishermen at work and enjoy freshly caught fish. Nearby is Travemünde front row – the city’s shopping mile, which is well worth seeing. Here you can take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful shops and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Another highlight is, of course, Travemünde beach. Here you will find hikers and walkers making their way to the Brodten cliffs at any time of year. But especially in summer, the beach is the meeting place for families with children. The bathing island and the playground by the shallow water are particularly popular with the little ones. And after a great day at the beach, you can take a relaxing stroll along the Travemünde beach promenade. If you are exploring the Bay of Lübeck and the Baltic Sea by car, you can take the Priwall ferry to the small peninsula. Priwall may only be half a kilometre long, but its wonderful sandy beach, nature reserve and historic museum ship in the harbour are sure to impress. Another great tip for families is the spectacular Travemünde sand sculpture exhibition. You will find more than 110 impressive sculptures made of special sand in large boat sheds, as well as a cosy café and a children’s play area.
Anyone on holiday in the Bay of Lübeck cannot avoid a visit to Lübeck. Because there is so much to see in this time-honoured Hanseatic city. So it’s no wonder that Lübeck’s Old Town with its medieval alleyways, brick houses and collegiate houses is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city has a total of seven towers, the most famous of which are certainly the Holsten Gate. The city’s landmark is also one of Lübeck’s most prominent sights. The old town is surrounded by the River Trave. When the weather is fine, life in the city takes place on the banks of the river. A great tip is also a Trave round trip. The various harbour and canal cruises give you a very special view of Lübeck – a great experience. One of the most popular Lübeck activities is a trip on the Wakenitz. The area is also known as the ‘Amazon of the North’ due to its unspoilt nature. If you are looking for beautiful excursion destinations in Lübeck, you should not miss the Old Harbour. Here you will find the museum harbour with impressive old fishing vessels, cargo sailing ships and tugboats. The next attraction is so well known that it is no longer one of Lübeck’s insider tips. However, the Buddenbrookhaus is definitely worth a visit. The imposing former home of Henrich and Thomas Mann’s grandparents served as the model for the novel of the same name. As the museum located here is being restored until 2028, you can visit the nearby exhibition ‘Buddenbrooks in the Behnhaus’ instead. If you want to enjoy a bit of culture during your holiday in the Bay of Lübeck, you can visit the Colosseum Lübeck. Various concerts, lectures and other cultural events regularly take place in the listed event hall. The Lübeck MuK – the Lübeck Music and Congress Hall – is also a popular venue for events on the Baltic Sea in Schleswig-Holstein.
